The opossum is the only marsupial native to North America. They are grayish white in color and are covered in fur with the exception of their ears and tail. The opossum tail is long and scaly. They weigh anywhere from 4 to 13 pounds. They are abundant throughout the state of Maryland and prefer to live in woods near water, but can also be commonly found in urban and suburban environments.

It’s a common misconception that opossums are diseased or aggressive. Opossums are highly resistant to diseases such as rabies because of their efficient immune system and lower body temperature. They even help lower the tick population!

Opossums are scavengers and are curious. It’s not uncommon to find one in your garbage. If you think you have one in your house, give us a call and we can safely remove and relocate it!
